This lovely home on Bleeker Street was built in 1894 towards the end of the Victorian era(1837-1901) in a style know as Italianate. Inspired by the villas of Italy, these homes were usually 2 story, with low roofs and wide decorative roof eaves and bay windows. Posts on wide porches have ornamental brackets tucked against the eaves. 403 Bleeker Street is a lovely example of the Italianate style. The wide porch is on two sides of the home, and the decorative dentil work under the roof eaves is exceptional. Because the builder, John Spargo, was an executive at Homestake Gold Mine, and a Master Mechanic, he had access to timbers and hardware from the mine, and also access to master carpenters and craftsmen from Europe who had come to work at the mine. The result is a rock-solid home, impeccibly built, with the elegance and charm of the Old World. It has been lovingly rescued and restored over the last 14 years by the current owners who are reluctantly offering it for sale.
