Custer is one of those communities I never get tired of visiting because every trip feels a little different. Some of my favorite days in the Black Hills have been spent riding my mountain bike along the Needles Highway, hiking through Sunday Gulch, climbing Black Elk Peak, or spending time around Sylvan Lake. Even after years of exploring the area, I still find new trails, overlooks, and adventures.

One of the things I love about Custer is how naturally outdoor recreation becomes part of everyday life. It's just as easy to head out for a morning hike as it is to spend an afternoon fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or taking a scenic drive through Custer State Park. Living here means you're never far from your next adventure.

Some of my favorite summer mornings begin summer with loading up my paddleboard and spending a few quiet hours on Legion Lake or Sylvan Lake before the crowds arrive. It's peaceful, beautiful, and one of those simple experiences that remind me why living in the Black Hills is so special.

The downtown has also become one of my favorite places to spend time after a day outside. Custer has developed a surprisingly good food scene with restaurants like Skogen Kitchen, which has earned a reputation well beyond the Black Hills.

I'm also a big fan of riding the George S. Mickelson Trail. One of my favorite days is riding into town, stopping for a burger and a local beer, then cooling off while browsing gear at South Dakota Outdoor Shop before heading back out on the trail. It's the kind of day that reminds me why so many people fall in love with the Black Hills.

Custer is one of those kinds of places wheree days don't have to be planned weeks in advance. Sometimes I'll wake up, grab my bike or hiking boots, and decide where the day takes me. That's one of the biggest differences between visiting the Black Hills and living here. Adventure simply becomes part of everyday life.

I almost always bring my camera when I'm in Custer because you never know what you'll come across. One day it's buffalo crossing the road, another it's dramatic clouds over the granite peaks, an old historic cabin tucked into the pines, or another unforgettable sunset. It's one of the most photogenic places anywhere in the Black Hills.

Throughout the year, Custer hosts community events that keep the town active well beyond the summer tourist season, including Gold Discovery Days, the Buffalo Roundup, farmers markets, concerts, and the annual Mickelson Trail Trek.

For me, Custer offers one of the best combinations of outdoor adventure, small-town charm, and community anywhere in the Black Hills.

Winter In Custer

Custer is a place where the adventure doesn't end when the snow starts falling. In many ways, winter becomes one of the most peaceful times to enjoy the Black Hills.

Locals take advantage of miles of trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and even fat biking. One of my favorite winter adventures has been riding my fat bike on sections of Needles Highway after it closes for the season. Riding through snow-covered granite spires with almost no one else around is an experience that's hard to describe until you've done it.

A good day winter day can start by grabbing a coffee from one of Custer's local coffee shops before heading out to explore the trails. After spending a few hours outside, there's nothing better than warming up with an incredible meal at Skogen Kitchen or relaxing with a burger after a day in the snow.

That's one of the things I love most about living in the Black Hills. Every season offers something completely different, so there's always another adventure waiting.

Living in Custer means every season brings a new adventure. Summer might be paddleboarding on Legion Lake, fall means colorful hikes through the granite canyons, and winter could be snowshoeing or fat biking along a quiet section of Needles Highway.

History Around Every Corner

Something I never get tired of in the Custer area is discovering reminders of the Black Hills' rich history.

Whether it's an old cabin tucked among the pines, historic buildings downtown, or reminders of the area's mining and ranching heritage, Custer has managed to preserve much of its character while continuing to grow.

Those pieces of history are part of what gives the community its charm and make it feel connected to the generations who called the Black Hills home long before us.

Downtown Custer

Downtown Custer has become one of my favorite places to spend time after a day outside.

Whether you're grabbing breakfast before a hike, enjoying dinner after exploring Custer State Park, or simply walking through the local shops, the town has a welcoming atmosphere that's hard to describe until you've experienced it yourself.

You'll find:

• Local boutiques

A few of my favorite stops is South Dakota Outdoor Shop, Bakers Bakery, Purple Pie Place, Buglin' Bull, there are. so many..  It's a fun place to browse gear, cool off after a ride on the Mickelson Trail, and visit with people who love the Black Hills just as much as I do.

Housing in Custer

Compared to some northern Black Hills communities, Custer often offers opportunities for buyers looking for more land, privacy, and a quieter pace of life. You'll find:

One thing I always tell buyers is not to compare homes in Custer to subdivisions in larger cities.
