Having lived, worked, and traveled throughout South Dakota for many years, I've found that every community offers something different.

I graduated high school in Spearfish, attended college and graduate school at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, spent years working throughout Sioux Falls, and have lived in multiple communities across western South Dakota. I've also helped buyers relocate throughout South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana for more than 26 years.

Rapid City is the second-largest city in South Dakota and serves as the gateway to the Black Hills.

I've spent years living and working throughout Rapid City, and one thing I've always appreciated is how much outdoor recreation is available without ever leaving town. You can hike M Hill, ride the Hanson-Larsen Memorial trails, spend time at Canyon Lake, or enjoy Skyline Drive, all within minutes of shopping, restaurants, healthcare, and entertainment. Compared to Spearfish, the in-town trail systems are generally shorter, but Rapid City offers more urban amenities and even more nearby winter recreation opportunities. For many buyers, it provides an excellent balance between city living and the Black Hills lifestyle.

My Local Perspective

Rapid City has always been an important part of my family's story. My children grew up here and attended school in Rapid City, where they had opportunities that eventually led to Division I athletic scholarships and academic scholarships. Watching them grow up here gave me a firsthand appreciation for what the community offers families beyond great schools.

One of the things I've always enjoyed about Rapid City is how easy it is to enjoy the outdoors without leaving town. Whether it's hiking M Hill, riding the Hanson-Larsen Memorial Trail System, spending time around Canyon Lake, or taking in the views from Skyline Drive, there's always somewhere to explore after work. Compared to Spearfish, I find the in-town trail systems are generally shorter, but Rapid City offers more shopping, restaurants, healthcare, entertainment, and easy access to winter recreation. Spearfish

Best for Outdoor Recreation and Quality of Life

Spearfish is often one of the first communities I recommend to people considering western South Dakota.

Located at the northern edge of the Black Hills, Spearfish offers a unique combination of outdoor recreation, community, education, and quality of life.

Residents enjoy:

• Fly fishing and outdoor recreation

One thing I love about Spearfish is how easy it is to incorporate the outdoors into everyday life. It's common to see people hiking before work, mountain biking after work, or spending weekends exploring the Black Hills.

Spearfish Canyon is one of the most beautiful areas in South Dakota and offers waterfalls, scenic drives, hiking trails, rock climbing, and incredible fall colors.

The community itself continues to grow while still maintaining a welcoming small-town atmosphere. For many people relocating to western South Dakota, Spearfish provides one of the best balances between recreation, healthcare, education, and quality of life.

My Perspective

As a Spearfish High School graduate and someone who has spent much of my life in the northern Black Hills, Spearfish has always felt like home. What I love most is that outdoor recreation isn't something you have to plan for. It's simply part of everyday life. It's easy to finish work and head out for a mountain bike ride, hike through Spearfish Canyon, paddleboard, or spend the winter skiing just minutes from town.

What surprises many people is how active the community is. Throughout the year there's almost always something happening. Summer evenings often include Wednesday night concerts in the park, Friday night music downtown, Chinook Days, farmers markets, festivals, local races, and community events that bring people together. The downtown continues to grow with locally owned restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and small businesses that give Spearfish its welcoming character.

For me, Spearfish offers one of the best balances of outdoor adventure, community, dining, entertainment, education, and quality of life anywhere in South Dakota. It's one of those rare places where you truly don't run out of things to do, no matter the season.

One of my favorite things about Spearfish is that you can decide after work whether you want to go for a mountain bike ride, grab dinner at a local restaurant, meet friends at a brewery, or simply enjoy live music downtown. That flexibility is one of the reasons so many people fall in love with living here.

Sioux Falls

Best for Career Opportunities and Urban Living

Sioux Falls is South Dakota's largest city and economic center.

For buyers seeking employment opportunities, healthcare, shopping, restaurants, and urban amenities, Sioux Falls is often one of the most attractive options in the state.

For buyers deciding between eastern and western South Dakota, the choice often comes down to lifestyle preferences.

My Local Perspective

While attending graduate school at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, I spent a great deal of time in Sioux Falls. I worked there, did much of my shopping there, and enjoyed spending time with my kids at Falls Park, the Great Plains Zoo, restaurants, and many of the city's parks and attractions.

Personally, I've always preferred the cooler climate and outdoor lifestyle of western South Dakota, but I completely understand why so many people choose Sioux Falls. If you're looking for strong career opportunities, excellent healthcare, shopping, dining, entertainment, and a vibrant nightlife, Sioux Falls offers opportunities that are difficult to match anywhere else in the state.

Hill City is  often described as one of the most charming communities in the Black Hills and offers a true mountain-town atmosphere. While it's a popular destination for visitors, it's also a wonderful place to call home for those who enjoy outdoor recreation, local businesses, and a close-knit community.

My Perspective on Hill City

Hill City has always been one of my family's favorite places to visit. My kids loved riding the 1880 Train, and it's still one of those experiences that brings back great memories every time we're there.

Today, I find myself returning for different reasons. I love hopping on the Mickelson Trail, riding from one town to another, stopping for a burger and a local beer, then riding back through the Black Hills. It's one of my favorite ways to spend a summer afternoon.

Hill City has also developed a fun food and beverage scene with local wineries and several breweries that make it a great place to relax after a day on the trails. And if you've never had dessert at the Alpine Inn, you're missing one of my favorite treats in the Black Hills.

For buyers looking for a mountain-town lifestyle where outdoor recreation, local businesses, and community all come together, Hill City offers a lifestyle that's hard to match.

While many people know Sturgis because of the motorcycle rally, the community offers much more than that.

Having lived nearby in Piedmont for many years, Sturgis has always been part of my daily life. I still find myself making trips there regularly, including visits to my veterinarian, and I've enjoyed watching the community continue to grow.

It's one of those communities that offers a unique blend of history, recreation, and entertainment throughout the year.

My Local Perspective

I lived in both Lead and Deadwood, and those communities played a big role in my love for the northern Black Hills. During that time I taught skiing at Terry Peak, and I still think it's one of South Dakota's hidden gems. While it's smaller than many Colorado or Montana ski resorts, Terry Peak has surprisingly fun terrain, a welcoming ski community, and enough variety to keep locals coming back all winter.

Deadwood itself has a personality unlike anywhere else in South Dakota. Beyond the history and gaming, it's a community filled with festivals, restaurants, live music, and year-round recreation. Living there gave me an appreciation for just how much there is to do in every season.

It's one of South Dakota's hidden gems.

My Perspective on Hot Springs

One of the things I've always loved about Hot Springs is that it feels different from the rest of the Black Hills.

I've spent time sailing on Angostura Reservoir, enjoying evenings at some of the area's wonderful restaurants, and wandering through the historic sandstone buildings that give the town so much character. There's something special about walking those streets and imagining a time when people traveled from across the country to experience the natural hot springs and the famous healing waters.

To me, Hot Springs feels like a community rediscovering itself. The historic charm is still there, the outdoor recreation is exceptional, and I think more people are beginning to appreciate everything this southern Black Hills community has to offer. For buyers looking for a slower pace without giving up access to recreation and history, Hot Springs is definitely worth exploring.

Brandon and Harrisburg

Best for Families Near Sioux Falls

These two rapidly growing communities continue to attract families looking for access to Sioux Falls while maintaining a suburban feel.

My Local Perspective

Most of my time in Brookings has been spent visiting South Dakota State University for concerts, events, and enjoying the Outdoor Campus. It's always struck me as a vibrant college community with a strong sense of school pride and a welcoming atmosphere.

While Brookings has a different feel than the Black Hills communities I know so well, its university, growing economy, educational opportunities, and family-friendly neighborhoods make it an attractive option for students, professionals, and families looking for a thriving eastern South Dakota community.

The best place to live in South Dakota ultimately depends on your goals, lifestyle, and priorities.
